Bi-Partisan Group of U.S. Sentors Appeal to the FCC to Maintain State Do NotCall Laws

Read The Indiana Attorney General's Public Release on the Re-Opening of the FCC registry regarding the CBA Petition.

Several organizations based in Indiana and across the country have threatened your privacy by asking the federal government to strip Indiana’s Do Not Call Law of important provisions that restrict telemarketing to your home.

These threats to your privacy come from two separate attacks on Indiana’s Do Not Call List:

• The Consumer Banker’s Association (CBA), a national trade association of banks, has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to declare that Indiana’s Do Not Call Law is pre-empted by the weaker federal Do Not Call Law. Such a declaration would allow businesses who believe they have an existing relationship with you to call you.

• A coalition of telemarketing firms and non-profit corporations who use telemarketers has petitioned the FCC to declare that states have no ability to regulate interstate telemarketing, only intrastate telemarketing. Such a declaration would allow telemarketers to avoid state regulation merely by calling from outside the state, which would effectively end state regulation of telemarketing entirely.

You can help fight these threats by calling these organizations and telling them what you think of their efforts at taking away your privacy. You can also help by letting the FCC know what you think. Your privacy is threatened, but our fight against these threats has only just begun. Together, we can still stop the FCC from overriding Indiana’s strong Do Not Call law.
